Helping to create Great Croquet Lawns
Croquet Lawn Maintenance and Nutrition
I now advise about 27 croquet clubs totalling 70 croquet lawns across the country from the Lake District to the South Coast and Taunton in the west to Colchester in the east. My service includes advice and guidance on all aspects of croquet lawn maintenance including the specification and supply of tailor-made fertilisers and turf care machinery; spreaders, spikers, mowers and sprayers. It is important to understand the requirements of your club, the nature of your soil and grass plants. Then a nutrition programme can be devised that suits the soil, your club and your budget.
Programmes devised for your club
Croquet lawns differ, soil can be light and sandy, heavy with clay or somewhere in between. Other factors such as acidity levels, grass type, drainage, levels of potassium and phosphates can all vary from club to club. Do you have irrigation, what equipment does the club have, is spraying an option, how much do you want to spend, what results do you want?
A wide range of factors must be considered when devising nutrition programmes to ensure that the money invested in turf care actually has the results that you desire.
Results you will love
The fertilisers that I supply are tailor-made for your club, they are not “off the shelf” products. They will be blended to the exact analysis that your lawns require. The ability to specify the precise fertiliser analysis is an amazing benefit now, and for the future development of your lawns. By tracking results and modifying the analysis it is possible to achieve continual improvement and better croquet lawns!
Benefit from other club's experiences
I am building a data base of croquet clubs, their soil type and analysis, nutrition programmes and records of results. Actual results and changes in soil analysis are tracked so that participating clubs benefit from knowledge gained across the complete data base.
Participate in tests and trials
Clubs can work together and exchange knowledge and ideas. For example Letchworth CC is conducting experiments on fairy rings using a number of methods to see which are most effective. Colchester are testing a fungicide to clear Fusarium patch.Guildford and Godalming CC have tested a rabbit repellant. At Bygrave I have tested a product to kill ant nests and I have been trialling worm suppressant as well.
In 2013 Letchworth CC tested the use of an advanced water management product called Revolution which was applied by spray each of 4 months at a cost of £190 for the year. One lawn was treated the other wasn't so is the control. The result? The treated lawn greened up more quickly after the heat wave but not evenly across the lawn. The untreated lawn played better even though it took longer to recover. In 2014 a standard wetting agent was used on both lawns but the lawn that had been treated in 2013 withstood the dry period far better and recovered more quickly with little sign of dry patch. It therefore seems that Revolution has a long term beneficial effect for non-irrigated lawns. This test was further developed in 2016 when a number of clubs used Aqueduct and Revolution surfactants to eliminate dry patch with 100% success.
I am now testing a biostimulant for Fusarium and Red Thread control and will report the results in 2017.
Trials like this mean that all croquet clubs can gain knowledge from actual results rather than the claims made on the sales brochure and this should lead to better croquet lawns..
I am keen to attract the participation of clubs wherever they are in the UK. Distance need not be a problem. Please E mail or phone me. Contact me.
