Recommended Machinery for Croquet Clubs

To maintain croquet lawns it is important to have the right equipment. I can personally recommend the products below which are in day-to-day use by croquet clubs. Thanks to my trade connections I am able to supply croquet clubs at preferential prices that should be better than you find anywhere else - otherwise let me know.

NEW Customised Mower for Croquet - coming soon

I used to recommend the Allett Tournament for croquet lawns because they made a special modified version for me. Unfortunately personnel have changed and this modification is no longer available.
For 2021 I am introducing a new customised mower for croquet. The cutting width is 24" which is ideal for croquet because it is easy to steer in pedestrian mode and when using a trailing seat. It has a 6 hp engine, a 14 blade cylinder and "shaver" blade for mowing down to 4mm. The quality of the cut is superb with over 200 cuts per metre for a super smooth, fast surface. The clipping box is of large capacity and tailor made in aluminium for the mower. A further advantage is that a trailing seat can be attached which improves the rolling effect and is often the choice for croquet clubs because it makes mowing much easier.
I will have a demo model available soon. All the working parts of the mower are new, but there is a big cost saving in the chassis which is re-used, sand blasted and painted. It reduces the cost and helps to reduce the carbon footprint as well. The price is likely to be around £2800 and I will be updating this information very soon.

Reconditioned ATCO Royale Mowers for Croquet

Picture
The ATCO Royale B24 is an excellent mower. Mine is now 28 years old, has a trailing seat and still cuts my croquet lawn to 5mm. In conjunction with a local mower engineer, I am supplying reconditioned mowers to Croquet Clubs with a full 12 month repair, replace or return guarantee. This guarantee is unusual and is exactly what I would want if I were buying secondhand.
The ATCO can be supplied with a trailing seat. The cost is usually between £650 and £950.
If you are interested, please contact me for details of the current machines in stock.

Sarel Spiker

The Sarel Spiker is 900mm (36")wide) and can be towed by a suitable lawn tractor such as a Countax or Westwood. Although the spiker is heavy it can be easily manoeuvered for storage by swinging over onto the small roller. By using a couple of wooden blocks the spiker can be neatly stored against a wall.
The spiker aids water / air penetration, greatly improves root growth, for use when seeding and general turf maintenance. Each large spiked section is 11” in diameter, calculated to avoid ‘tearing’ of the turf. The tensile steel spikes are 1/4” in diameter, and 1 1/3” in length. Each spike is replaceable, held on with a large nylock nut. Also coupled to the unit is a 4.1/2” diameter roller for transportation across hard surfaces.
I can supply a 600mm width (24 inches) fitted with a handle for pedestrian use if you don't have a lawn tractor.
  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
  • Enhanced soil water uptake
  • Improved fertiliser uptake and use
  • Reduced water run off and collection
  • Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance
  • Enhanced thatch breakdown

I am a trade supplier of Sarel Spikers , contact me for further information and preferential Croquet Club prices.

New 3 metre Sprayer - coming soon

Sprayers are used for applying liquid fertiliser, growth regulator, wetting agent, moss killer, weed killers and pesticides. The normal dilution rate means that 50 litres is applied per lawn. With soluble iron and worm control products 100 litres is usually applied. Some of these products do require Pesticide Certification. I can provide further information and suggestions which will help to keep your club within the regulations.
For 2021 I have a new customised sprayer for croquet lawn use. This sprayer can be pulled by hand or using a lawn tractor or even a suitable lawn mower It has a capacity of 96 litres and a single 3 metre wide angel nozzle. The price will be around £450. More details and photos to follow.
For spot spraying, I recommend the Smith Performance knapsack sprayer, it is very comfortable to wear and of excellent quality.

Smith Performance Field King Pro Sprayer

Spraying fertiliser at Letchworth CC. The boundary boards are painted alternately with single and double marks spaced 3 metres apart (the width of the spray). The spraying is done in two passes to ensure even coverage. In the first pass you drive mark to mark and the second pass between the marks. The single and double marks make it easy to discern the correct target from 70 yards away ie the length of two lawns.
