Equipment Maintenance

Mowers

Mowers should be serviced annually but adjustments are usually necessary during the season. See Mower Settings in the Turf Info section.

The height of cut can be adjusted by raising or lowering the front roller. Some mowers are provided with a setting bar for this purpose.
It is important that the mower cuts cleanly, otherwise you will get a ragged cut and bruising to the grass. The bottom blade can be adjusted so that when the cylinder turns it cuts cleanly. People have lost fingers doing this so ensure that the mower is switched off before adjusting.

Sarrel Spikers

It is advisable to oil or grease the bearings from time to time.Check the tightness of the tines every few months - especially the tines near the ends which take more strain.

Fertiliser Spreaders

Fertilisers contain a variety of salts so can be corrosive. For this reason it is important to thoroughly wash the spreader every time after use.

Sprayers

When filling the sprayer fill with half the amount of water required than add the product/products that are to be sprayed. Agitate and add the remaining water. Agitate again.
After use the sprayer should be rinsed three times - some people add washing up liquid  If spraying Iron, be aware that it stains clothing, paving slabs, timber or most things it touches. After use the sprayer must be very thoroughly rinsed and Iron dilutant should NEVER be left in the sprayer, otherwise it may clog nozzles, filters and pipes.
Filters should be cleaned as necessary. Knapsack and Boom sprayers have removable nozzles and each nozzle usually has its own filter. Nozzles should only be cleaned with nylon bristles so that the aperture isn't damaged.
The Brilliant Sprayer broadcast nozzle doesn't have a filter because the aperture is quite large. To clean the nozzle, unscrew the nozzle cap, remove and clean, then replace.
During the winter use antifreeze to protect your sprayer.
