Broadcast Sprayers

Having a broadcast sprayer makes croquet lawn maintenance much easier.
  • Liquid fertiliser - enters the plant through the leaf so is quick acting and doesn't leave granules on the surface.
  • Wetting Agent can be mixed in the tank with fertiliser and will prevent the development of Dry Patch. If you already have a Dry Patch problem, you can use the sprayer to apply Dry Patch Curative.
  • Soluble Iron is very low cost and can be used to control Moss and fungal diseases such as Red Thread, Dollar Spot and Fusarium.
In my view most sprayers are far too expensive and often not suitable for croquet lawns. For this reason I now build my own brand of sprayers designed specifically for croquet lawns.
I make two sprayers, a 60 litre and a 98 litre capacity. The normal dilution rate means that 45 to 50 litres is applied per lawn.
The 60 litre sprayer can be pulled by hand or towed by a suitable ride-on mower (6.5hp) or lawn tractor.  The 98 litre sprayer can be towed by a ride-on mower or lawn tractor. The spray width on both sprayers is is 4 yards (3.6 metres) and use a single broadcast nozzle  It takes 10 to 12 minutes to spray a full size croquet lawn using either version (depending on the pattern used). In both cases the operator is travelling away from the spray drift when spraying.

Knapsack Sprayers

For spraying weeds and moss, a knapsack sprayer is a low cost option. These usually hold 15 to 20 litres. The SportTurf Rutland B20 is ideal for the purpose and is fitted with a professional Reflex/Polijet AN1.2 large orifice deflector nozzle.  This means that the nozzle is less prone to blocking and is easily cleaned if necessary.
Held at 50cm above the ground, the spray width is 1 metre and it applies 10 litres to 400 sq metres in about eight minutes. To achieve this you should walk at a speed that covers the length of a croquet lawn in 40 seconds. To ensure an even spray, the bouts should be overlapping by 50%, or you can make a second application at right angles to the first.
To cover a full size croquet lawn you will need to apply 50 litres of spray using the above method.
