How the Granular Fertiliser Works
- The fertilisers are tailor-made to my specification and can be tweaked to suit your lawns, they aren't "off the shelf" products. Any part of the analysis can be changed.

-  Granular fertilisers are in 15kg bags because they are easy to handle and also avoid having split bags when there is an odd number of lawns. On a half lawn apply 1 bag; a full size lawn 2 bags and a bowling green 3 bags.

Biogran fertiliser
- The Spring/Autumn Biogran fertiliser contains a broad spectrum of bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi which encourage the breakdown of thatch into usable nutrients within the root zone. Magnesium oxide is also included in the fertiliser to promote photosynthesis and plant health. Another ingredient is Sea Weed which promotes germination and growth at the time when temperatures and daylight hours are not at an optimum level (April and September).

- Results across many croquet clubs show that thatch is reduced by about 30% per annum until an ideal level of 5 to 8mm is reached. At this point, the breakdown of thatch equals the production of thatch and therefore stays in balance.

- This system is in line with the Sports Turf Research Institute article "Do Not Disturb" and eliminates the need to remove thatch mechanically by scarification which is damaging to fine grasses.

Synthetic Formula
12 5 14 3MgO Low Cost Synthetic

This is a synthetic slow release fertiliser that is applied three times during the summer season, in April, July and August and releases nutrients over an eight-week period.
The number of bags per Summer programme are:
Half Lawn 3 x 15kg bags
Full Lawn 6 x 15kg bags
Bowling Green 9 x 15kg bags

How it works
The fertiliser contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium which are often referred to as NPK. These are essential nutrients in fertilisers for croquet lawns, each offering distinct features and benefits. Nitrogen promotes growth, aiding in leaf and stem development, crucial for the dense, uniform playing surface for croquet lawns. Phosphorus supports robust root growth, enhancing the turf's ability to establish and maintain a strong foundation, vital for withstanding wear and tear especially around hoops. Potassium contributes to overall turf health and stress tolerance, helping the grass withstand environmental pressures such as drought and disease while promoting resilience and recovery. Together, these nutrients provide a balanced nutritional regime, ensuring optimal growth and vigour of the turf, thereby improving playing conditions and aesthetic appeal.
MgO
3% of Magnesium Oxide is included in the fertiliser to promote photosynthesis and plant health.
Slow Release
The slow release is accomplished by incorporating longer, more complex molecules which take bacteria longer to break down. This method does not use a polymer coating so doesn't pollute the soil, environment and bird life with microplastics.

When to apply?
This is a synthetic fertiliser not organic and is therefore can scorch if incorrectly applied. To avoid scorch, apply late in the day and leave overnight before playing on the lawn or better still, apply before rain or irrigation.
Mowing
You can mow before application if you wish. After application it is best to mow with the box off until the fertiliser has dispersed so that you don't mow it off the surface with the clippings.
Scarifying
Synthetic fertilisers do not reduce or prevent the build up of thatch in the root zone. As thatch can make the lawn spongy and slow, you may need to scarify in the autumn to counteract any build up of thatch in the soil.
Safe to use
The fertiliser is not toxic to humans, pets or wildlife.

Nutrient input
The programme inputs the following amounts of nutrition

N - 108 kg/hectare
P – 19.8 kg/hectare
K – 104.6/hectare

The inputs of P and K are equal to plant demand. Building up phosphates in the soil can lead to an oversupply, which can result in a number of negative environmental effects. One of the main concerns is that excess phosphates can lead to the growth of harmful algae blooms in nearby water bodies. This can lead to a decrease in the oxygen levels in the water, which can harm fish and other aquatic life. Additionally, the overabundance of phosphates can also lead to an increase in weed growth and a decrease in the overall health of the soil. It is important to use phosphates in the soil in moderation to maintain a healthy balance.

Organic Fertiliser
12 5 14 3MgO Mainstay Organic

This is an organic based slow release fertiliser that is applied three times during the summer season, in April, July and August and releases nutrients over an eight-week period.
The number of bags per Summer programme are:
Half Lawn 3 x 15kg bags
Full Lawn 6 x 15kg bags
Bowling Green 9 x 15kg bags
How it works
This organic based fertiliser incorporates a source of nitrogen, potassium, trace elements and significant levels of amino acids. It provides not only the nutrition for growth and root development, but also an organic bio-stimulant effect to encourage germination, establishment and resistance to environmental stress.
It contains a natural cocktail of bio-stimulant substances that boost the plant’s ability to cope with stressful conditions including drought, heat and salinity. The bio-stimulant effect encourages the plant growth and stimulates the natural stress response, keeping the sward greener and healthier for longer.
The carbohydrates and organics in the fertiliser also stimulate beneficial micro-organisms in the soil. This usually stops thatch build-up thus eliminating the need to scarify.
MgO
3% of Magnesium Oxide is included in the fertiliser to promote photosynthesis and plant health.
Slow Release
The slow release is accomplished by incorporating longer, more complex molecules which take bacteria longer to break down. This method does not use a polymer coating so does not add microplastics to the soil. (See the New Scientist Jan 24th 2024 Microplastic Pollution)

Safe to use
- The fertiliser is not toxic to humans, pets or wildlife and the croquet lawn can be used immediately after application.

Biogran All Season Fertiliser
12-6-10 3MgO 50% slow

- This is an organic based slow release fertiliser that is applied three times during the summer season, in April, July and August and releases nutrients over an eight-week period..

BIOGRAN contains:
- A broad spectrum of bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi which encourage the breakdown of thatch into usable nutrients within the root zone.
- Seaweed which contains growth hormones and micronutrients that can enhance root development, leading to stronger and more resilient grass.
- Magnesium oxide to promote photosynthesis and plant health.
- The fertiliser is converted into usable nutrition by bacterial action. When favourable growing conditions exist (warm and moist), the bacteria are more active thus providing increased nutrients in sympathy with plant demand.
- The slow release is accomplished by incorporating longer, more complex molecules which take bacteria longer to break down.

Winter Granular Fertiliser
More Info
x
- If your lawns are used during the winter, it is a good idea to fertilise with a low input of Nitrogen in November and February.

- Using too much nitrogen damages the grass. The reason is that the plant cells are like balloons. Nitrogen causes the cell to expand but the cell wall requires photosynthesis to thicken. When daylight is in short supply, too much nitrogen will cause the cells to burst thus damaging the plant and inviting disease and fungal attack.

- The granular winter feed has low nitrogen but 8% iron which hardens the grass and helps to control moss.

Liquid Fertiliser

- The liquid fertilisers contain Humates which are derived from humus and promote an active soil biology, helping thatch breakdown and healthy growth.

- Liquid fertiliser enters the plant mainly through the leaf and any that misses the leaf will be washed into the rootzone and be absorbed by the roots. This means that the fertiliser enters the plant quickly and has the advantage that there are no granules left on the surface.

- The lawn can be used as soon as dry which is usually within an hour.

- The fertiliser can be tank mixed with Wetting Agent and Soluble Iron.
-It can be used in winter and is simply applied at a quarter strength making it an economical way of maintaining a healthy sward during the winter months. Diluted Soluble Iron can also be added to the tank to control moss and fungal diseases.
