For a long time I have been pleased with Dwarf Ryegrass. It is widely used for croquet. It is hardwearing and drought resistant. It recovers from drought and stress very well, germinates at lower temperatures and produces less thatch tah other cultivars. HOWEVER, Rye is slow to grow sideways because it doesn't tiller (sideshoot), instead it grows by expanding from the roots which oiis a slow process. For this reason I decided to try a Rye mix with creeping fescue and laid my new croquet lawn with Barenbrug Medal in the autumn of 2019. The result was really good and the fescue does seem to fill the gaps that are normally found on ryegrass lawns. It costs more but £20 to £40 extra seems seems a good investment to acheive a better playing surface. Duncan Hector 2021 |
